Family Friendly Guide to Kennebunk & Kennebunkport

If you’re planning a coastal getaway, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport are two of Maine’s most charming towns — full of history, sandy beaches, and plenty of activities for both families and couples. This summer, we spent a long weekend exploring them and found so many little gems worth sharing.

Where to Stay

Highly recommend The Colony Hotel, a classic oceanfront spot that feels timeless. With sweeping views and easy access to the beach, it’s the kind of place where you can relax into vacation mode right away.

The Sea Glass Kennebunkport, a luxury airbnb in the perfect location, walking distance to so many sites. Relax on your private porch with ocean views, explore the charming town steps away, and enjoy the famous Dock Square in just a 5 min drive.

Relax & Recharge

One of our favorite experiences was booking the Sea Sauna at the Nonantum Resort — nothing beats sitting in a floating sauna, taking a dip in the Kennebunk River, and then stepping back inside to warm up again. While the young kiddos won’t be able to go, it’s a must-do for a little retreat for the adults.

On the Water

Kennebunkport has plenty of ways to enjoy the coast. We loved hopping aboard the Spirit of Massachusetts for cocktails at sunset. Another highlight? Joining a lobster tour through First Watch Whale Watch. Learning how lobstering works (and getting a taste!) was a fun and educational experience for the whole family.

Family Fun

If you’re visiting with kids, don’t miss the playground at Mother’s Beach. It’s right on the sand, so the kids can climb and swing while you keep an eye on the ocean. Bringing a beach wagon is a lifesaver for hauling towels, toys, and chairs down to the shore.

And if you like to golf, pack your clubs — the driving range at Hillcrest is a great way to sneak in a little practice while the kids play.

Local Eats & Shops

Mornings started at KPort Bagels with warm bagels and coffee — the perfect fuel before heading out for the day. In Kennebunk, Bev’s is a local institution and a great spot to grab a bite or sweet treat.

For dinner, Batson River Brewing & Distilling is a favorite. The atmosphere is cozy, the menu is creative, and it’s a fun spot to end the evening.

In between meals, we wandered through the Kennebunk Farmers’ Market and craft fairs, browsing handmade goods and sampling local treats. Book lovers should stop at The Octopus Bookshop in Kennebunk, a charming little indie shop that’s easy to get lost in. And of course, half the fun is popping into all the shops along the way, from coastal décor to locally made art.

Getting Around

While both towns are walkable in spots, having a car is really helpful for bouncing between beaches, downtown areas, and hidden gems. It gave us the flexibility to explore at our own pace. But depending where you stay, you might be able to rent a bicycle to get around the area!

Travel Tips: Pack light but smart — we always bring our beach wagon, something to babywear, and a comfortable stroller for getting around town with kids. They made the trip so much easier and gave us more energy to enjoy everything these towns have to offer.
